GEORGETOWN — Nobody would be surprised if Sussex Central and Cape Henlopen High’s baseball teams meet again with bigger stakes on the line.

But on Tuesday evening it was the Golden Knights who took control of the Henlopen North with a 4-1 victory over the Vikings at Sports at the Beach.

The two squads are considered among the top teams in the state this spring. Unbeaten Sussex Central is now 5-0 in the North, 11-0 overall while Cape Henlopen is 3-2 in the North, 10-2 overall.

In Monday’s Delaware Interscholastic Baseball Coaches Association poll, the Knights were ranked No. 1 in the state while the Vikings were No. 2.

On Tuesday, Cape Henlopen took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning on a solo home run from Trey Hitchcock.

Sussex Central, though, answered with three runs in the bottom of the third to take the lead for good. Osiah Kelley tied the contest with an RBI double while Joaquin Rodriguez-Costa had a run-scoring single in the outburst,

The Knights added an insurance run in the fifth.

Kelley, a sophomore, was also the winning pitcher, throwing a complete-game three-hitter with 10 strikeouts. Noah Burroughs and Rodriguez-Costa each contributed two hits to Sussex Central’s total of six.

Cape Henlopen had won the last seven meetings with the Knights, including two in a row by just one run each. Tuesday’s victory was Sussex Central’s first over the Vikings since 2015.

Sussex Tech is also 5-0 in the North after edging Caesar Rodney, 1-0, with a run in the bottom of the seventh at Frawley Stadium on Tuesday night.

The Ravens are slated to face Sussex Central on May 2 at Sports at the Beach. Sussex Tech, which beat Cape Henlopen, 3-1, on April 18, is ranked third in the coaches’ poll.
