Speak Up: How do you feel the housing situation stands in Delaware?

Posted
We’ve been reporting on housing data in the First State and whether there are enough affordable residences for citizens of every financial status. What are your thoughts? Are there too many new developments going up? How can the number of lower-cost rentals be increased? Are the prices to buy single-family homes getting too high?

  • The need for viable, affordable, (environmentally) safe housing for older adults is an issue. Not everyone has retired with multimillion-dollar nest eggs. Surely, there’s a middle ground for those of us with moderate retirement earnings who don’t want to risk blowing all our savings on housing in a decent area. — Willette Barnett
  • Is this a joke? Affordable housing is laughable, depending on location. Sussex beach towns are dying for summer/seasonal help and can’t get positions filled due to a lack of affordable seasonal rentals, even though they keep saying they are building affordable housing. — Carrie Merrill
  • Make a law that no one from more expensive states can move here anymore, like New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. (I’m not serious, obviously, but it would be nice.) They just keep voting to raise taxes and talking about how cheap it is here, while locals are struggling to survive. — Kristin Benjamin
  • If we all just stop paying ridiculous prices, they have to lower. You almost need a nationwide boycott of the prices. These houses are not worth the price. Sellers are ripping people off because they know people are going to find a way. Plus, the corporations are buying up properties. — Lynne Gillis
  • When what would have been deemed starter homes in the past are going for $10,000 over asking price, coupled with high rates, the market is totally out of balance. — Donna Godfrey Rich
  • We need more affordable housing and rentals for those in lower-paying jobs. — Thomas J. Chilton
  • There are way too many developments going up without proper road adjustments and space. And the housing cost for them is high. — Veronica Miller
  • I was born and raised in Delaware and had lived here my whole life. But I had to leave Delaware last year because I couldn’t find an affordable rental as a single person. — Mary Margaret Gygrynuk
  • As a buyer who has been in the market for years, I can’t find anything comfortably livable and affordable. It’s either one or the other, sadly. It’s disheartening. — Velvet Johnson
  • A couple things: 1. The cost of building is unattainable for most folks, even if they own the land. 2. Loan programs have to lower salary caps. 3. There are not enough trades to keep up with demand. — Norman Jester
