Seaford High implements metal detectors after gun, knife found
18-year-old student charged
SEAFORD — The Seaford School District implemented metal detectors Friday at Seaford High School after a search of a student’s property the day prior revealed a gun and knife.
According to postings on the district’s website and Facebook page, the weapons were found during a disciplinary search by staff. A school resource officer immediately intervened and detained 18-year-old Fernando Etienne, while Seaford police responded.
Mr. Etienne was charged with two counts of carrying a concealed deadly weapon, possession of a firearm in a Safe Recreation Zone and possession of a weapon in a Safe Recreation Zone.
He was presented to a Justice of the Peace Court judge and released on his own recognizance.
The district said it is fully cooperating with law enforcement to ensure a thorough investigation.
Its post also noted that the metal detectors would be used Friday and at random periods throughout the rest of the school year.
“We remain committed to providing a safe environment for all students and staff at Seaford High School and throughout our district,” it read.
